North Shield started inside one Calgary contractor's safety program. It was built by the company's safety manager for the crews filling in the forms, and they still use it every day.
At a Calgary-based architectural-acoustic installer, the safety program ran on numbered paper forms: FLHAs, toolbox meetings, equipment and vehicle inspections, permits and incident reports. Filling them in was one job. Keeping them organized for the COR audit was another.
So the safety manager started rebuilding those forms as a web app the crews could open on their phones. The first version went live in April 2026. It has since grown to 47 forms and more than 700 updates, many of them prompted by a crew member or supervisor asking for a change.
North Shield Safety Co. is that same platform, now offered to other Alberta contractors dealing with the same paperwork.
That usually means gloves, a cold morning and no signal. If a form can't be filled in under those conditions, it gets changed until it can.
Workers fill in the forms, so the forms have to work for them. A clean audit trail comes from forms people actually complete, not the other way around.
Every form fills in and signs with no signal, then sends itself when the phone reconnects. A safety tool that needs full bars fails in basements, vans and site trailers.
There's no quarterly release cycle. The platform has had more than 700 updates since April 2026, and problems flagged in the field are often fixed the same day.
